Shipping Heavy Lapidary Equipment: A Buyer's Guide
2 min readUpdated October 10, 2026
Equipment is heavy
A large slab saw can weigh well over a hundred pounds, and even a tabletop cabbing machine is dense. Heavy items are usually shipped on a pallet or crated, and the seller is responsible for packing them securely. Ask the seller how they plan to pack and ship before you buy, especially for older, cast-iron machines.
How shipping is priced here
Each seller sets their own shipping, so check the shipping information on the listing. Sellers can offer a flat rate, free shipping on everything, free shipping once an order reaches a minimum amount, and a separate rate for international buyers. Listings that ship free show a Free Shipping badge. You can also filter the shop to show only free-shipping listings. If you buy from more than one seller, shipping is charged once for each seller.
Handling time
Each seller also sets a handling time, the number of days they need to prepare an order before it ships. Heavy items sometimes need longer because they have to be crated or booked on a freight carrier.
When it arrives
- Inspect the package before you sign for a pallet or crate, and note any visible damage on the delivery paperwork.
- Photograph the packaging and the item as soon as you open it.
- Check that everything listed as included is there.
- If something is wrong, contact support within 3 days of delivery. See our warranty and buyer protection page for how that works.
Local pickup and questions
If a machine is too heavy or fragile to ship comfortably, message the seller to ask whether they can arrange freight or whether there is another option. Use the messaging on the listing so your agreement is on record.
